Focus On: The Carnegie Room

Our much loved Carnegie Building was opened in 1904, having been designed by architects Marshall and Henry Emery with a $15,000 grant from the well known businessman and philanthropist Andrew Carnegie.  Built in the Arts and Craft style, the original clock still sits above the fireplace, and a painting of Andrew Carnegie (who became known as “the patron saint of libraries”) adorns the center wall.

For 105 years, the Carnegie Room has become a sought after retreat, providing inspiration and information to all who enter.  Indeed our community takes great pride in this landmark building.  The Library is delighted to be able to provide the Carnegie Room as a permanent home for the South Nyack Recital Series.  Sponsored in association with the Soiree Society for the Arts, the series has now been renamed “Carnegie Room Concerts.”  Each Saturday evening, the room sparkles with the talent of outstanding musicians creating an inviting, enriching and social atmosphere compatible with the distinct charm of the Carnegie Room.
105 years of service have taken their toll on this very unique building, and plans for the preservation and restoration of the Carnegie Room will commence this year.  Shortly, the entrance will be restored as closely as possible to its original appearance and made ADA compliant.  All the renovations will be in a style compatible to the original design to preserve and enhance the charm and character of the room.

The Library seeks your support to raise $200,000 to accomplish this worthy project.  Andrew Carnegie believed in giving to the “indyustrious and ambitious.”  The Nyack Library has indeed earned a reputation for doing more than the expected, and making outstanding use of his original $15,000 investment.
